Why Real Estate Agents Should Talk Like They Actually Talk

When you’re new in real estate, it’s easy to think you need to sound more “professional.”

So what happens?

Your emails sound formal.

Clean, minimal separation between panels with subtle spacing or thin lines, maintaining a cohesive and modern look.

Your texts sound stiff.
Your tone doesn’t sound anything like you.

And without realizing it…

You start sounding like a completely different person.

A Quick Introduction

I’m Victoria Leahy, a Realtor and Director of Agent Services at Realty World Legacy.

One of the most common things I see with new and newer agents is overthinking communication — especially when it comes to sounding “professional.”

And it usually creates more problems than it solves.

The Problem No One Talks About

Here’s the issue:

If a client reads your messages…
and then meets you in person…

…it shouldn’t feel like they’re meeting a different human.

But when your tone doesn’t match who you are, that’s exactly what happens.

And it creates confusion.

You Don’t Need to Sound Like a Script

If you don’t use big, fancy words in your day-to-day life…

Don’t force it in your communication.

Clients aren’t looking for perfect wording.

They’re looking for:

  • Clarity

  • Confidence

  • Someone they feel comfortable with

  • Someone they can trust

And trust doesn’t come from sounding impressive.

It comes from sounding real.

Consistency Builds Trust

Your communication should feel consistent across everything:

  • Text messages

  • Emails

  • Phone calls

  • In-person conversations

The tone should match.

Because when it does, clients feel like:

👉 “This is exactly who I expected.”

And that builds trust faster than anything else.

Talk Like You Text. Text Like You Email.

This is the simplest way to think about it:

Talk like you text.
Text like you email.
Email like you talk.

It doesn’t mean being unprofessional.

It means being consistent.

Professional Doesn’t Mean Different

A lot of agents think:

“Professional = different than who I am”

It doesn’t.

Professional means:

  • Clear

  • Respectful

  • Reliable

  • Honest

You can be all of those things without changing your personality.

Final Thought

Be you — in every format.

Because the version of you that shows up in a message should match the version of you that shows up in person.

That consistency is what builds trust.

And trust is what actually builds your business.
