Why the Best Real Estate Agents Still Ask for Second Opinions
Why the Best Real Estate Agents Still Ask for Second Opinions
One of the biggest misconceptions in real estate is that experienced agents always have the answer.
They don’t.
And the best agents know that.

In fact, one of the most consistent habits I see among strong, professional agents is something that might surprise people: they ask for second opinions.
Not because they don’t know what they’re doing — but because they care deeply about getting things right.
Real estate transactions have a lot of moving parts. Contracts, timelines, negotiations, deposits, conditions, client expectations, and situations that don’t always appear in textbooks or licensing courses.
Even after years in the business, new scenarios still come up.
That’s just the nature of the industry.
Sometimes a deal lands on your desk and you think:
“Okay… this one is a little different.”
And that’s when experienced agents pause and say:
“Can I run this by you for a second?”
A Quick Introduction
I’m Victoria Leahy, a Realtor and Director of Agent Services at Realty World Legacy.
I work closely with realtors at many different stages of their careers — from new agents learning the business to experienced agents navigating complex deals.
One thing I see consistently among the strongest agents is their willingness to ask questions.
Why Second Opinions Matter in Real Estate
Real estate is a profession where details matter.
A small misunderstanding in a clause, a missed timeline, or a negotiation handled incorrectly can have real consequences for clients.
That’s why thoughtful agents don’t rush decisions.
Instead, they slow down long enough to confirm:
The strategy they’re about to use
The interpretation of a clause
The best approach for the situation
Whether there’s something they might be overlooking
A quick second opinion can prevent a mistake and provide clarity before moving forward.
Asking Questions Is a Sign of Confidence
Some people assume that asking questions means an agent isn’t confident.
In reality, it’s often the opposite.
Strong agents understand that real estate is constantly changing. New contract scenarios appear, client situations evolve, and every deal has its own unique factors.
Asking a trusted colleague or broker for input shows professionalism — not weakness.
It demonstrates that an agent is focused on doing the job properly.
The Role a Brokerage Environment Plays
This is also why the environment an agent works in matters so much.
If agents feel hesitant to ask questions, unsure who to approach, or worried about being judged for needing a second opinion, they are more likely to stay silent.
And silence creates risk.
When a brokerage encourages collaboration and open communication, agents feel far more comfortable asking for guidance.
That environment benefits everyone involved — especially clients.
Real Estate Shouldn’t Feel Isolated
Real estate is independent work, but it shouldn’t feel like isolated work.
Even experienced agents benefit from having someone they can call and say:
“Hey… can I run something by you?”
Those conversations help agents:
Avoid mistakes
Learn from each other
Improve their decision-making
Grow faster in their careers
The best professionals never stop learning.
Final Thought
The goal in real estate isn’t to pretend you know everything.
The goal is to care enough about your work — and your clients — to make sure you’re getting things right.
And sometimes that starts with a simple question.
“Can I run something by you?”
